The following are suggestions: taking one or more graduate courses, participation in the Putnam Examination, attending summer conferences, and applying for and participating in research opportunities for undergraduates. Faculty members may be able to suggest additional activities.
Requirements for the PhD program include reading knowledge two languages. Choose from among German,
French or Russian. This requirement is usually satisfied by passing an
examination given by a Mathematics faculty member. It is helpful to
have studied at least one of the languages before beginning the
graduate program. No language is required for the Master's degrees.
