MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held in C-36 Padelford Hall at 3:30pm,
March 12, 2019. John Palmieri, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes.

Chair's Remarks

Class sizes for calculus will be growing next winter primarily due to retirements and the departure of faculty.
This has been discussed with the Dean at the Science Chair’s meeting.

There is a university-wide taskforce on how student evaluations are being used and should be used, including in
merit, promotion, and tenure cases.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has recently prohibited DOE-funded researchers working in certain “emerging
research areas and technologies” from collaborating with colleagues from “sensitive” countries.

A cumulative limit of 5 years has been added to the draft of the postdoc bargaining.

Hiring is now complete with 3 new AAPs, 3 Assistants (2 have requested deferrals), and 2 Full-time Lecturers
joining the department next year.

Announcements

Mathday is coming up on March 25, 2019. Volunteers will be meeting this Friday for training. A reserve squad
is needed so please contact Jim Morrow if you’d like to be on the “standby” volunteer list.

Committee Reports

The Undergraduate Program Committee proposed a revisal of course content for 394/5/6 in order to open up
bigger classes to non-majors, especially those related to probability and statistics. 394/5 will retain the same
syllabus but the focus of topics will be modernized and textbooks upgraded. 396 will be completely overhauled
as a course on finite Markov chains and Monte Carlo techniques. Pre-reqs for 394/5 will stay the same. 396 will
now require Math 308 (Linear Algebra). Proposed changes are to go into effect this spring.

A vote was held with all in favor of this proposal.

The Executive Committee proposed a new set of by-laws for the department. A vote was held with all in favor of
the proposal.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 4:37pm.
