Course Assistants

 

Overview

The Department offers undergraduate course assistant positions on a quarterly basis.  Those hired for autumn are eligible to be hired for winter and/or spring if positions are available, if satisfactory work has been performed and if they continue to be otherwise eligible for employment as outlined below.

To be an undergraduate Course Assistant you must: 

  • Be a UW undergraduate in good academic standing for the academic year you are applying for
  • Have strong grades in relevant Math courses (124/5/6 for 100-level, 207/208/224 for 200-level). 
  • Be able to attend all in-person meeting times including:  
    • Scheduled lecture and quiz section meetings  
    • Weekly instructional team meetings 
    • Scheduled office hours 

You must also: 

  • Be legally eligible to work in the USA 
  • Registered for at least 6 credits per quarter during the academic year (Aut-Spr). 
  • Not have any paid obligations through the UW that will cause you to work over 19.5 hrs/week. 

Timeline

We accept applications in the spring for the following academic year, but there is no guarantee of available positions. The 2025-2026 application will close on April 20, 2025. This application is for AUT 2025 employment, though we often rehire from this pool for the subsequent WIN and SPR quarters.

Job Descriptions

TAs have varying time obligations of approximately 4-20hrs/week.  TAs are required to attend all meetings, trainings, and course obligations.  Grading is to be processed promptly as per the course instructor's guidelines.  You are expected to be available to work during the entirety of the quarter. 

Undergraduate TA duties and responsibilities may include the following (specific duties and responsibilities will be provided by course instructor): 

  • Attend lectures and quiz sections 
  • Facilitate discussions in lecture and quiz section 
  • Hold regular office hours 
  • Answer student questions in person and on course discussion forums 
  • Manage and respond to course-related e-mail 
  • Grade assignments and assessments  
  • Proctor exams and quizzes 
  • Maintain grading records 
  • Attend instructor/TA meetings 
  • Attend TA training sessions 
  • Act as liaison/mediator between student and professor 

 Math 111/112: 

  • Attend lecture as required (which may include exam administration), 1 hour every other week
  • Staff Lab (quiz section), 4 hours 
  • Instructional team meeting, 1 hour
  • Office hours, 2 hours
  • Grading, average 2-4 hours 

Math 124/5: 

  • Attend lecture, 3 hours (which may include exam administration)
  • Office hours (in MSC), 2 hours 
  • Facilitate group work (with graduate TA), 3 hours 
  • Weekly TA meeting, 1 hour 
  • Instructional team meeting, 1 hour
  • Grading, average 1-3 hours 

Math 126: 

  • Attend lecture, 3 hours (which may include exam administration)
  • Office hours (in MSC), 2 hours
  • Instructional team meeting, 1 hour
  • Grading, average 4 hours 

Math 207/208/209/224*:

  • Office hours (in Lab), 2 hours  
  • Monitor course discussion board, no more than 30 minutes at a time a few days a week (max. 2 hours)
  • Instructional team meeting, 1 hour
  • Grading, average 2-5 hours 
  • Exam administration, no more than 1 hour

*Weekly duties and hours will depend on course assignment.

Compensation

Undergraduate course assistant compensation is hourly work.  Undergrad course assistant hourly pay starts at $22.65 per hour.  Time sheets must be submitted and approved by payroll deadlines for payment to be processed.

All aspects of this offer are contingent upon your legal eligibility to work in the United States. To verify your eligibility to work, you must have a valid Social Security Number (SSN). International students who do not have a valid SSN must secure one before they will be authorized to work. Prior to starting work, you must complete all-pre-employment declarations (i.e. sexual misconduct declaration).

This appointment is dependent upon satisfactory performance of your duties.  It is also expected that you attend any orientations and/or training sessions required for your position.  You will be paid at your hourly rate for time spent in such required orientation or training sessions, except as described in Article 35 Section 4 of the collective bargaining agreement that is referenced below.

 

Union Affiliation/Collective Bargaining Agreement

Your appointment classifies you as an Academic Student Employee (ASE) and is governed by a collective bargaining agreement between the University of Washington and UAW Local 4121, which is found at the following website: https://hr.uw.edu/labor/academic-and-student-unions/uaw-ase/ase-contract.   Both you and the University of Washington are bound by the terms of this contract, so it is important for you to familiarize yourself with its provisions prior to accepting this appointment.  You will be offered an opportunity to join UAW Local 4121 and, as a member, you will pay dues each pay period.  For more information regarding the UAW Local 4121 please visit their web site at http://www.uaw4121.org.
