Professor Emeritus Ernie Michael died on April 29, 2013. He was born in 1925 in Switzerland, and after time in Germany and the Netherlands, moved with his family to New York City. He was an undergraduate at Cornell. Like his future colleague Frank Brownell, he served in the US Navy in World War II, after which he returned to Cornell and received his Bachelor's degree. He got a Master's degree from Harvard and his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1951. He spent a year at the Institute for Advanced Study, and then he began his career at the University of Washington in 1952. His research was focused on general topology. He retired in 1993, remaining in the Seattle area with his wife Erika.
