Kitty Baxter, long-time faculty member and student advisor who retired in 1985 and died in 2012, is featured in the current issue of the American Mathematical Society's newsletter, The Line, in recognition of her generous estate gift to the AMS. Kitty completed her PhD at UC Berkeley in 1959 under Abraham Seidenberg, then moved to Seattle with her husband, Edward Scott O'Keefe, and joined the department. (O'Keefe was a member of a prominent mathematical family, including uncle Griffith Evans, former president of the AMS, long-time chair at Berkeley, and eponym of the department's current home.) Kitty's gift will support mathematical research.
