John Westwater (1942-2017)

Professor Emeritus Michael John Westwater died on May 14, 2017, at his home in Seattle.  He was born in Aylesbury, England, and attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned a first-class degree in Mathematics in 1962.  Following graduate studies at Cambridge and Princeton, he held a NATO postdoctoral fellowship at the ETH in Zürich, returning to Princeton in 1968 to spend two years at the Institute for Advanced Study.  John joined the faculty at UW in 1970, continuing his research in mathematical physics and retiring in 2005.  John’s non-mathematical interests included travel, open-water swimming, cycling, hiking, and—late in life—croquet.
