MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held in C-36 Padelford Hall at 3:30pm, November 6, 2018. John Palmieri, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes followed by a modification of the agenda to allow the Undergraduate Program to present first.

Undergraduate Program

Professors Thomas and Dumitriu announced the following changes:

  • Math 342: Art of Problem Solving, which has been run as Math 380, will now be Math 342 and will require permission from the instructor for enrollment.  A vote was held, passed, and approved.
  • All 400-level courses will open up to non-majors in Period II of registration.  Math 300 is accessible to non-majors by petition in Autumn (open to all in Summer).
Chair’s Announcements

Professor Palmieri announced that new sections of Math 126 and 300 will be open in Winter.

Two tenure-track positions are being requested for next year, especially given the increased demands for Calculus and the departure of several faculty.  In addition, we hope to be able to hire new TAs, a Lecturer, and 1-2 AAPs.

Classroom sizes for Math 124/125 and Math 307/308 will be temporarily increased to help off-set the teaching shortage.  However, due to classroom shortages and room capacities, this strategy may be quite restricted.  The size of Math 309 and 324 will remain small.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 3:57pm.
