MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held in C-38 Padelford Hall at 3:30pm, November 5, 2019. John Palmieri, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes.

Chair's Remarks

The new guidelines for syllabi strongly discourage instructors from requiring medical or legal documentation from students for any absences. Chris Laws, a principal lecturer in astronomy and one of the people behind this new guideline, will be available to answer questions at the December department meeting.

Classroom PDL C-36 will now be designated PDL C-38.

UW is undergoing “Financial Transformation.” They will be updating their fiscal computing systems with the anticipated switch date in 2023.

The College budget is better than predicted.  There are no deficits with a loss of 50-60 faculty positions. No further losses are anticipated.

The sizes of incoming classes are stabilizing with the bulk consisting of domestic students.

Hiring committees will be formed by Spring quarter in preparation for an earlier recruiting season next year.

Announcements

Professor Palmieri welcomed Melanie Graf, one of this year’s new postdocs, and introduced Kira Wyld, the new STEM librarian.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 3:44pm.
