Abstract:
We discuss recent uniqueness results in the mathematical theory of inverse problems and their relation to seismic investigations of Mars using NASA's InSight lander. Constrained by severely limited data, one must be careful in drawing conclusions from measurements. We explain how spectral and travel time measurements can be used to reliably to obtain information about Mars, especially its mantle. We present three independent data sets that can be used to construct a radial model of the Martian mantle, hopefully leading to uncontroversial conclusions.
