Algebraic geometry is the study of algebraic sets: common zero sets of polynomials. Due to the correspondence of algebraic sets with ideals in multivariable polynomial rings over a field, many computations related to algebraic sets involve computations on these ideals. We will investigate a division algorithm for multivariable polynomials, and see how Gröbner bases can be used as a computational tool with various applications.
