The arithmetic of spheres

The plethora of connections between stable homotopy theory and number theory go back over half a century, starting with Quillen's discovery of the "chromatic picture". In recent years, this link has grown even stronger, with methods of p-adic Hodge theory finding applications to calculation of algebraic K-theory and vice versa, leading to major advances on both sides. This talk will be a gentle introduction to these phenomena.
