I will describe how to attach a complex surface to any Riemannian metric on a surface so that its complex geometry is closely linked to the geodesic flow of the surface. In the last few years, these complex surfaces have become a useful device to organise and reinterpret various rigidity questions arising in geometric inverse problems and dynamics.
