MINUTES
The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held in C-36 Padelford Hall at 3:30 PM, November 7, 2017. Ron Irving, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.
Chair’s Announcements
Professor Pollock recently attended the Science Chair’s meeting on Ron’s behalf. He reported that the Legislature had cut tuition leaving the UW underfunded while Activity Based Budgeting (ABB) incentives were lower this year. Temporary instructional budgets were also cut; however, the Math department is able to maintain a similar budget from previous years. This will not carry over through the biennium.
Looking at hiring and planning, the Provost has cut down the department’s search from two to one. However, if there are two strong candidates, the College will make a case to the Provost.
Lastly, sabbatical leaves will need to be requested before the Thanksgiving break via email to the Chair.
Faculty Senate
Professor Lieblich reported that the current fund-split at the UW is 34% state/66% tuition whereas the vast majority of other public institutions are at a 50/50 ratio. An adjustment to match this standard will be requested at the coming legislative session.
Planning Committee
Professor P. Smith motioned for a vote to revise the current Priority Statement in regards to hiring. The motion was passed with all in favor of the revisions.
Appointments Committee
Professor Toro met with Dean Hawley to discuss the best practices for conducting a faculty search. A handbook and online toolkit was developed by UW’s Faculty Advancement office to aid in hiring and retaining a diverse and inclusive faculty. The department hopes to make the first pass through applicants by November 14th and schedule interviews by January.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 4:31pm.
