MINUTES
The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held in C-38 Padelford Hall at 3:30pm,
December 3, 2019. John Palmieri, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.
The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes.
Chair's Remarks
Professor Palmieri introduced Chris Laws, chair of the Faculty Council on Student Affairs, who discussed the
Class C resolution of the current UW policy (SGP, Chapter 112) regarding medical excuse notes. This new policy
would exempt students from needing to provide official documents via a medical provider in order to be absent
from class. The Faculty Senate and ASUW are discouraging instructors from continuing the practice of requiring
medical excuse notes on the grounds that it is discriminatory and unreliable.
Professor Palmieri announced that funding is available to those interested in developing Data Science courses,
with priority given to those related to social, cultural, etc., aspects of data science. The deadline for proposals is
Jan. 15.
The Executive Committee will be discussing revisions to the current voting scheme for hiring; one model is
"approval voting," used by the Department of Statistics.
The upcoming beer bash this Friday will include a graduate awards presentation.
The department dinner has been set for February 1st at the Burke Museum. Details will be sent out soon.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 4:43pm.
