MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held via Zoom at 3:30pm PST, May 5, 2020. John Palmieri, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes.

Announcements

Kira Wyld and Mel DeSart from UW Libraries spoke to the department about the 2018 UW Open Access Policy. A new OA repository is being built, meant specifically for scholarly articles published by faculty. The Open Access Policy Implementation Team is currently working on a pilot to determine how to make this new repository most effective. The math department, along with four others, have been selected as candidates for the pilot. Faculty will be contacted by the library with guidelines on how to share their scholarly articles.

Chair's Remarks

The Milliman Lectures have been postponed to next year. The schedule will be announced once available.

Although the college budget is not directly tied to the state budget, a 5% cut is likely. The college is hoping to absorb the loss so that departments will not be affected beyond hiring reductions in the next year.

Retention offers may not be as competitive due to the state of the budget.

KinderCare is reserving spots for faculty and staff once their operations are greenlit to reopen. Incoming faculty will also be notified of this childcare option.

Committee Reports

The Undergraduate Program committee has proposed permanently assigning the course number MATH 318 to the trial second Linear Algebra course. This course is geared towards non-majors and is more applications oriented as opposed to the current MATH 340 which is an intro to abstract algebra and proofs with a pre-req of MATH 300 effectively restricting it to math majors. A vote was held, passed, and approved.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 3:51pm.
