Normal bundles, scrolls and Lazarsfeld Mukai bundles

We review the normal bundle, its relation to deformation theory, and how the degree of the normal bundle of a curve in a variety is closely related to its genus and degree. We then review scrolls, going through some examples and then describing carefully how they can arise from quotients of the restricted cotangent bundle of P^n.
