MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held via Zoom at 3:30pm PST, November 10, 2020. John Palmieri, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes.

Chair's Remarks

Enrollments for MATH 124 are very high this quarter with the on-line section being particularly large. Additional sections of MATH 125 have been added for winter quarter which should help balance out enrollments across all sections. The same may be implemented for MATH 126 in the spring depending on what happens this winter.

As of now, there are two postdocs who will be departing at the end of the academic year and three who may opt to stay with the department an additional year. The department plans to hire at least two new postdocs this year with the possibility of adding hires dependent on any new departures. This plan is contingent on having a similar budget next year which won’t be determined until later on. Graduate student admissions follows along similar guidelines and draws from the same budget.

Moving forward, new hires must sign a Sexual Misconduct Declaration per Washington state law and University of Washington.

The Dean’s office has asked for two drafts of the 5-year hiring policy this year: one in December and another in April. The December draft will be reviewed by the Executive Committee then sent directly to the Dean’s office. The second draft in April will be made available for feedback to the voting members of the department along with the recommendations of the Planning Committee before passing along to the Dean.

Announcements

The Undergraduate Program Committee proposed renumbering the 300-level service courses to the 200-level: MATH 307, 308, 309, and 324 becoming respectively MATH 207, 208, 209, and 224. Note that this could make the math minor more difficult to complete. A vote was held, passed, and approved.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 3:55pm.
