I will review earlier results and discuss recent advances concerning the case when the manifold is parabolic (i.e., the recurrent case). The goal is to obtain sharp two-sided estimates of the heat kernel associated with the Laplace-Beltrami operator on certain complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds.
