Monty McGovern: Geometry of the flag variety and representation theory

Abstract:
A flag in complex n-space is a nested sequence of subspaces.  These humble objects have a very rich geometry with many unexpected and fascinating connections to the representation theory of Lie groups and algebras.  I will explore some of these, repeatedly going back and forth between geometry and representation theory.

Sándor Kovács: Algebra=Geometry

Abstract: In algebraic geometry, algebra and geometry go hand-in-hand to understand and solve problems in both disciplines. In fact, one of the reasons for the broad effectiveness of algebraic geometry in other areas stems from the fact that this interplay between algebra and geometry allows us to view problems in completely different light from substantially different points of view.  In this talk I will describe a way to construct a geometric object from purely algebraic data and then use it to prove a (seemingly) purely algebraic result.
