MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held in-person in C-38 Padelford Hall and virtually via Zoom at 3:30pm PST, June 7, 2022. John Palmieri, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes.

Chair's Remarks

Undergraduate mathematics and dance double major Fran Herr won the College of Arts & Sciences Dean's Medal in the Natural Sciences. Please feel free to reach out to congratulate her.

There will be three special events this Thursday, June 9th, in the Denny Room at Oak Hall. There is an undergraduate ceremony from 10-11:30am; an ACMS event from 12:30-1:30pm; followed by the graduate ceremony plus beer bash from 2:30-4pm.

All meritorious faculty have been approved to receive a flat 3.25% raise this year.

This will be John Palmieri’s fourth year as Chair. The executive committee (absent John) has formed an internal search committee, per the department’s standard procedure, with Steffen Rohde serving as Chair of this committee along with Zhenqing Chen, Alexander Nichifor, and Cynthia Vinzant. They will be contacting faculty to assess the state of the department and gather suggestions for candidates.

This has been a long year (in many ways) and I wanted to extend my thanks to everyone in the department for getting us here today. I hope that everyone is able to rest and recharge their batteries over the summer.

Committee Reports

The Diversity Committee has further revised the Diversity Statement. Nine out of ten committee members have voted to approve the statement. A vote was held, passed, and approved.

The Graduate Admissions Committee shared the list of incoming students. Recruitment was done via a hybrid model this year which proved to be a challenge but successful nonetheless. 455 applications were received—an increase from previous years. Seventeen are being admitted. The median GPA was 3.9. No GRE was required this year.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 4:13pm.
