MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held in-person in C-38 Padelford Hall and  virtually via Zoom at 3:30pm PST, December 6, 2022. John Palmieri, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes.

Chair's Remarks

The beer bash is this Friday, December 9, at 3:30pm in HUB 250. All staff, grad students, and faculty are welcome.

It looks like we’ll be able to hire at least two postdocs this year. Faculty will be updated if this changes.

The hiring committee (John Palmieri, Ken Bube, and Matt Conroy) for the teaching-stream assistant professor position is conducting their initial review of applications. All voting faculty should be able to access these files on Interfolio. Please send any comments or questions regarding the applicants to the committee. We hope to pare down the list by early January.

The funding structure for the summer budget was changed two years ago wherein the individual departments would be responsible for covering their costs on their own. The previous summer left the department in a large deficit which the College was able to cover; however, this highlighted the need for a change in how the department has run its summer programs and offerings. Consolidating some courses, eliminating others (e.g. “for credit” prelim prep), and creating a flat salary for summer teaching would help streamline the program and create a more manageable budget.

The draft for the hiring plan was sent out to faculty for review. The tentative plan for next year is for three tenure-track positions.

Announcements

The Diversity Committee is scheduled to meet with Dr. Maya Angela Smith, the new Associate Dean for Equity, Justice and Inclusion, and would like to remind faculty to send in their responses to the email from Farbod Shokrieh before January. If you have done any outreach or diversity work connected to the department, please share this info with the committee.

Committee Reports

The Graduate Program Committee would like remind those interested in course scheduling by group to first register yourself with those groups that you would like to discuss courses with. Please be sure to fill out the forms regarding this set-up that were sent out via email. Further details will follow.

All requests for seventh-year funding for next year have been approved. New students will now be advised that they are funded for up to six years.

Prelims and core courses are being rethought. Please send comments and suggestions to the committee.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 3:59pm.
