MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held in-person in C-38 Padelford Hall and  virtually via Zoom at 3:30pm PST, January 3, 2023. John Palmieri, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes.

Chair's Remarks

The deadline to submit a nominee for the postdoctoral search is Monday. Please send an email to the search chair, James Zhang.

As a reminder, you can sort the nominees by field by going to “Filter by Form Response” then selecting the “AMS subject classification” option.

Washington State has raised the overtime-exempt salary threshold for state employees which includes postdocs but not faculty. Therefore, their salaries will be increased next year which may lead to fewer hires in future years unless additional funding is received.

Teaching-stream applications are being reviewed. If you see any candidates whom you’d like to discuss or know more about, please reach out to the search committee (John Palmieri, Ken Bube, and Matt Conroy).

Announcements

Math Day is running again this year on March 20th and student volunteers are needed. Approximately 1500 students from across the state are anticipated to attend and volunteers help guide these groups around campus, as well as, assist with lectures and activities. Students are not required to have a background in math nor have any prior experience. Please contact Jonah Ostroff if interested.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 3:42pm.
