Free probability is a non-commutative analogue of probability theory. In this talk we will give a gentle introduction to free probability and motivate its applications in random matrices. There will be lots of free things during the talks: free independence, free convolution, a kind of free Fourier transform and so on. Time permitting, we will illustrate the proof of semicircle law using techniques from free probability.
