How to make a sphere out of two trees, and why

Steffen Rohde
Thursday, October 26, 2023 - 4:30pm to 5:30pm
PDL C-038

I will begin by discussing some examples of self-similar ("fractal") sets, both in the deterministic and the random setting, with an emphasis on trees (or dendrites). Then I will show how to glue two trees together to form a sphere, and will
discuss how this arises in both complex dynamics and in probability theory. The talk will be self-contained and has many pictures.
