MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held virtually via Zoom at 3:30pm PST, November 7, 2023. Max Lieblich, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

Chair's Remarks

The Chair congratulated Cynthia Vinzant on her recent designation as a Fellow of the AMS.

The minutes from the previous meeting and schedule for next year’s meetings were approved.

Given the magnitude of the MSRI grant from the NSF, we’ve decided not to pursue it this year. We hope to build a record of collaboration with the aforementioned departments so that we’ll be ready to apply for a large scale grant in five years’ time.

The department has been considering a fee-based Master’s Program. Please send thoughts to Soumik Pal starting in the winter.

We’d like to build up our connection with alumni. If you have any updates regarding your former students, please share them with Max.

The Chair discussed the usage of private messages and social media posts in relation to public records and the Freedom of Information Act.

Announcements

The department has funds available to cover some RAships. The Graduate Committee will require students to apply via an online form.

The recently formed Career Development Committee (Sara Billey, Bobby Wilson, Stefan Steinerberger, Chris Hoffman, Jayadev Athreya, and Sarah Garner) shared their initiatives, goals, and encouraged faculty to become undergraduate mentors.

Committee Reports

The Appointments Committee is on round two of their deliberations and hope to invite those on the short list for interviews before the end of this week. Interviews will take place around the end of November and beginning of December so please try to keep your schedule open so as to meet with the candidates and go to the talks. The final ranking meeting will take place December 12th.

New Business

The Chair advised everyone to be careful not to use personal email addresses when engaging in university business as university emails are public documents. Therefore, your personal emails will be vulnerable to discovery if requested by a court of law. This is in keeping with the University’s policy.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business, the meeting passed into executive session at 4:13pm.
