MINUTES

The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held virtually via Zoom at 3:30pm PST, January 9, 2024. Max Lieblich, Chair, presided at the meeting. Rose Choi was recording secretary.

Chair's Remarks

The Personnel Committee is going over unit adjustments over the next few weeks.

There will be a postdoc hiring meeting on January 30th. Please read James Zhang’s email detailing the timeline and process.

The first round of offers for the assistant professor positions have been made.

The department’s retention policy has previously been to delegate the authority for these decisions to the Personnel Committee and Chair. In discussion with the Executive Committee, the recommendation is to renew this policy for the next two years. A vote was held, passed, and approved.

Announcements

The Speakers Committee urged faculty to be more active in the colloquium both before at the social gathering and at the talks themselves.

The Chair also encouraged faculty to attend the department tea and socialize with the graduate students.

Committee Reports

The Undergraduate Program Committee proposes that the department offer credit for Math 120 to students earning a score of 3 or higher (out of 5) on the new AP Pre-Calculus Exam. A vote was held, passed, and approved.

As a reminder, there is a depository for undergraduate course materials shared last quarter. It is a good resource for instructors so please consider sharing your materials and provide any feedback you may have to the UPC.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no new business and no executive session, the meeting adjourned at 3:54pm.
