MINUTES
The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics was held virtually via Zoom at 3:30pm PST, March 5, 2024. Max Lieblich, Chair, presided over the meeting. Rose Choi was the recording secretary.
The meeting began with approval of the previous meeting’s minutes.
Chair's Remarks
Piotr Pstrągowski will be joining the department as an Assistant Professor in January 2026. There is one additional hire that is still being negotiated.
The department beer bash is this Friday, March 8th.
Announcements
Jessie Loucks-Tavitas won a poster prize at the 2024 Joint Mathematics Meetings.
Undergraduate double major Cin Dacey Ahrens (computer science and mathematics) was awarded the President’s Freshman Medalist Award.
The WXML poster session is on Thursday at 5pm. AWM-UW is also screening “Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani” the same evening at 7pm.
Prospective graduate students will be visiting the campus this Thursday and Friday. Please make them feel welcome.
Committee Reports
The Graduate Committee proposes the following changes to the manifolds sequence:
- Change title to “Geometry and Topology”
- Remove some point-set topology and add some algebraic topology e.g. simplicial homology in the first quarter
Students who want to take this sequence but have never taken an undergrad class in topology will be strongly encouraged to read a set-topology book over the summer before the start of classes and/or enroll concurrently in Math 544 and Math 441.
The plan for implementing the changes is to:
- Run the new version in the coming year and see how it goes.
- Ask for the department's approval to make the change permanent if it goes well.
