A handy guide to building compact 3-manifolds from infinite-type surfaces

In this talk we will discuss how to build nice compact 3-manifolds from infinite-type surfaces using surface homeomorphisms. We will then use our knowledge of surfaces and the dynamics of surface homeomorphisms to bound the volume of the 3-manifolds we create. This represents joint work with Elizabeth Field, Autumn Kent, Heejoung Kim, and Chris Leininger (in various configurations).
